The Urban Cottage combines the ideals of net zero, accessibility and advanced framing methods into an affordable-by-design home on a small footprint. As a 1 bedroom / 1 bath starter home the attic is reached by a pull down ladder that can be replaced with a spiral staircase to finish the home into a modest 2 or 3 bedroom / 2 bath home. The optional storm shelter basement is reached through an exterior bulkhead door and spiral staircase. Using advanced framing and precut lumber packages it is easily and quickly built by 2 workers. Without any exterior crawl space or attic vents an exterior fire assembly is easily attained for wildland-urban interface fire areas. With optional photovoltaic, battery backup and separate ventilation system the home can recirculate and filter the air during shelter in place emergencies.
